Eliminate Bacterial Infections with Metronidazole 500mg Tablets

September 29, 2015

Metronidazole 500mg is a drug that is used as an effective antiprotozoal and antibiotic medicine.  Metronidazole 500mg can be taken either as is or with other antibiotics for a more potent treatment regimen for certain bacterial or protozoal infections such as bacterial vaginosis, endocarditis, and pelvic inflammatory disease. Also, most doctors prefer to prescribe metronidazole 500mg tablets to their patients who happen to have amoebiasis, trichomoniasis, giardiasis, and dracunculiasis as it is very effective in treating these conditions.  Metronidazole 500mg tablets have been deemed as the go-to medicine for initial episodes of mild or moderate colitis caused by the organism Clostridium difficile.  Metronidazole 500mg is available as an oral tablet and it is also available as a topical cream as well as it is also available for intravenous administration.

The most common side effects you may experience when taking metronidazole 500mg tablets include appetite loss, nausea, headache and an unusual metallic taste to the mouth.  Sometimes, allergic reactions or seizures after taking metronidazole 500mg tablets might occur.  Metronidazole 500mg tablets are advised not to be taken during the early stages of pregnancy; however, it appears to be okay to take in the later stages of pregnancy.  Metronidazole 500mg is not to be taken by women who are currently breastfeeding as the drug can be passed on to the infant.

Metronidazole 500mg has first been commercially distributed and used by people in France during the 1960s.  Metronidazole 500mg oral tablets are included in the World Health Organization’s list of important medicines that should be present in a basic community’s health system.  Thankfully, metronidazole 500mg tablets are available in almost all parts of the world.  Also, metronidazole 500mg oral tablets are fairly affordable, so most people can easily buy them for a full course treatment, for example, 10 days.

Metronidazole 500mg oral tablets are primarily used for the treatment of the following: amoebiasis, giardiasis, oral infections, pneumonia, bacterial vaginosis, intra-abdominal infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, periodontitis, lung abscess, and trichomoniasis.  Metronidazole 500mg can also be used in patients who have infections caused by Prevotella, Peptostreptococcus, Fusobacterium, Clostridium and Bacteroides species.  Along with other medicines, metronidazole 500mg is also a good medicine for eradication of Helicobacter pylori in order to help prevent infection from occurring in patients who are still recovering after surgical operations.

Should your doctor prescribe you to take oral metronidazole 500mg tablets, then you should keep in mind to follow your doctor’s advice and instructions on how to take it and how many days you should take it. Remember that antibiotics like metronidazole 500mg work at its peak when its amount within your body is maintained at a constant level, which is why it is essential that you take this medicine by schedule and at even-spaced intervals.

Ensure that you continue taking this medicine until you have finished the full course as prescribed by your doctor, even if you already feel better after a day or two of taking it.  Stopping too abruptly and not finishing the full course of treatment with metronidazole 500mg will result to a possible re-growth of the infecting protozoa or bacteria, which will lead to a relapse of your infection.
